Our Vision for Dyckman Marina
There should be an equal investment in the upland space to create a 21st century marina that is a gateway to the waterways, not a gated parking area for private boats. We urge Parks to maintain access for the community, and to listen to the concerns of the thousands of New Yorkers that this closure will impact. We would like to see a marina that prioritizes education, youth development, and recreation for people of all abilities.
We agree with the Parks department that the Dyckman Marina is in need of a major overhaul. We disagree with their limited approach and implementation plan.
The Parks plan lacks changes to any of the upland (non dock) infrastructure for the marina. Their plan leaves the dilapidated Quonset hut and crumbling outbuilding that houses the inadequate public restrooms unchanged. The marina is used not only by people who want to get on the water but by people who come to enjoy the land near the water, as well.
By ignoring the land and physical infrastructure the Parks department is not building for a future that addresses the long-term needs of the community, the reality of climate change and creating a future marina for all New Yorkers. They seem to be building marinas for the past, not the future
